A/B Test Your Links — No Extra Tools Needed
You share a link to your landing page. It gets 5,000 clicks. But would the other version of that page have done better? Without a test, you'll never know. And setting up a proper A/B test usually means stitching together separate tools, manually splitting traffic, and eyeballing spreadsheets to figure out if the difference is real.
Not anymore. Smart A/B Testing is now built directly into Clypt. One short link, multiple destinations, edge-speed redirects, real statistical analysis — no extra tools required.
How it works
Start with any existing Clypt link. Enable A/B testing and add up to 5 destination URLs (variants), each with a label and traffic weight. Set weights to 50/50 for a classic split, or go 70/30 if you want to minimize risk on the new variant. Clypt handles the rest.
When someone clicks your link, our edge redirect engine uses consistent hashing — a combination of the visitor's IP, user agent, and link ID processed through SHA-256 — to deterministically assign them to a variant. A cookie (clypt_ab_{code}) locks them into that variant for 30 days, so the same person always sees the same page. No test pollution from repeat visitors.
Edge-speed redirects (<50ms)
This isn't a serverless function cold-starting at 500ms. Clypt runs all redirects at the edge via Vercel's global network, powered by Upstash Redis for sub-50ms latency worldwide. Your visitors get redirected before they even notice — whether they're in an A/B test or not.
The edge cache is automatically invalidated whenever you create, update, or end a test, promote a winner, or change the link's destination. Zero stale data, zero manual cache busting.
Real statistical significance, not vibes
The A/B test dashboard shows you per-variant click counts, traffic share, and most importantly — statistical confidence. We use a chi-square test to calculate whether the difference between variants is statistically significant or just random noise.
You'll see a confidence percentage (e.g., "87% confident") with a visual progress bar toward the 95% threshold. Below that, a plain-English recommendation tells you whether to keep running the test or call a winner. No statistics degree required.
Once significance is reached (p < 0.05 with at least 100 clicks per variant), a winner notification banner appears at the top of your results page.
Time-series analytics and breakdowns
The results dashboard includes a 48-hour time-series chart showing click volume per variant over time — so you can spot trends, traffic spikes, and time-of-day patterns at a glance.
Below the chart, you get per-variant breakdowns by device type (desktop, mobile, tablet), top countries, and browser. This helps you understand not just which variant wins, but who prefers each variant and why.
One-click winner promotion
Once you have a winner, click Promote next to the winning variant. Clypt sets the link's destination to the winner's URL, ends the test, and all future clicks go to the proven best performer. Your test data is preserved for reference — you can always look back at what you tested and what won.
Per-variant UTM injection
Each variant can carry its own UTM parameters. When a visitor is assigned to a variant, the corresponding UTMs are automatically appended to the destination URL — so your Google Analytics or attribution platform knows exactly which variant drove the conversion. No manual URL tagging required.
Built for marketers, not engineers
Traditional A/B testing tools require JavaScript snippets, SDK integrations, or code changes to your site. Clypt's approach is different: the test happens at the link level, before the visitor even reaches your page. That means zero code changes to your website, works with any landing page platform, tests are live the moment you create them, and you can test pages you don't even control (like partner pages or marketplace listings).
Full API, MCP, and integration support
Everything in the dashboard is also available through the REST API. Create tests, check results, adjust weights, and promote winners programmatically. The Clypt MCP server (v1.3.0) includes dedicated tools for A/B testing, so AI agents can run and manage tests through natural language.
The Chrome extension lets you create a quick 50/50 split test right after shortening a link. The WordPress plugin exposes A/B test methods for theme and plugin developers. And the Zapier integration supports creating tests, checking results, and promoting winners as trigger and action steps.
How to set up your first test
Step 1: Go to your Clypt dashboard and find the link you want to test. Click the flask icon (or navigate to the A/B test tab).
Step 2: Add your variants. Enter up to 5 destination URLs, give each a descriptive label (e.g., "Original", "New headline"), and set traffic weights (must sum to 100).
Step 3: Click Start Test. Your test is live immediately. Share the link as normal — Clypt handles the rest.
Step 4: Monitor results on the A/B test dashboard. Wait for statistical significance, then promote the winner or end the test.
